Abstract
This study investigates the influence of distribution channels on market
performance with customer loyalty as a mediating variable in the noodles
industry of Adamawa State, Nigeria. Recognizing the competitive nature of the
fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) industry, the research sought to
determine how wholesale, retail, and online sales channels contribute to market
outcomes and the extent to which customer loyalty strengthens these
relationships. A survey research design was adopted, and data were collected
from 265 respondents drawn from channel partners across the noodle’s
distribution chain, including sales representatives, distributors, sub distributors,
retailers and consumers. Structured questionnaires were used to capture
perceptions of distribution practices, loyalty, and performance. The data were
analyzed using Smart PLS 3, employing a segmented approach to simple
mediation analysis. Reliability and validity of the constructs were confirmed
through Cronbach’s Alpha, Composite Reliability, and Average Variance
Extracted (AVE), while discriminant validity was established using the
Heterotrait Monotrait (HTMT) criterion. The results revealed that wholesale,
retail, and online sales channels each had significant positive effects on market
performance, with the online sales channel exerting the strongest influence.
Similarly, all three distribution channels significantly predicted customer
loyalty, with online platforms again demonstrating the greatest effect. Customer
loyalty itself was found to significantly enhance market performance and to
mediate the relationship between distribution channels and performance. Effect
size analysis further indicated that online sales channels contributed the most to
explaining variance in performance outcomes. The model explained 85.7% of
the variance in market performance and 28.3% of the variance in customer
loyalty, demonstrating strong explanatory power. The study concludes that
distribution channels are not merely logistical mechanisms but strategic levers
that shape both loyalty and performance. The findings are theoretically
grounded in Porter’s Value Chain Theory, Service-Dominant Logic, and the
Resource-Based View, and they provide practical implications for managers
seeking to optimize distribution strategies and build enduring customer
relationships in Nigeria’s noodles industry.
