Heavy Metal Contamination in Cosmetic Products: An Agada Tantra Perspective on Chronic Toxicity

Sep 2026 · International Journal Of Ayurvedic And Herbal Medicine · 0 citations

Abstract

Cosmetic products are extensively used for cleansing, beautification, personal grooming and enhancement of appearance. Although cosmetics manufactured under appropriate quality and safety standards are intended for routine use, contamination with potentially toxic metals remains an important public-health and toxicological concern. Lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, chromium and nickel have been detected or investigated in different categories of cosmetic products, including decorative cosmetics, skin-lightening preparations, eye cosmetics and products containing mineral pigments. The toxicological significance of these contaminants depends upon their concentration, chemical form, bioavailability, route and duration of exposure, as well as individual susceptibility. From the Ayurvedic perspective, Agada Tantra provides a systematic framework for understanding toxic substances and their effects. Classical concepts including Vișa, Gara Vișa and Dūṣīvișa offer potentially useful conceptual models for examining contemporary chronic toxic exposures. However, direct equivalence between heavy metals and any single classical category of Vișa cannot be established without adequate textual and experimental evidence. The present review critically examines heavy-metal contamination in cosmetic products and explores its possible relevance to Agada Tantra, with particular emphasis on chronic, low-level and cumulative exposure. The review also discusses routes of exposure, toxicological mechanisms, clinical manifestations, prevention, quality control and future research priorities. An interdisciplinary approach combining classical Ayurvedic textual analysis with modern analytical toxicology may provide a scientifically rigorous framework for investigating the contemporary relevance of Agada Tantra.
