DESIGN SYSTEMS AS AN OBJECT OF ACADEMIC RESEARCH: CHARACTERIZATION AND RESEARCH AGENDA

Sep 2026 · Revista de Estudos Interdisciplinares · Vol 25, pp. e3876 · 0 citations

Abstract

This article characterizes design systems as an object of academic research and proposes a research agenda derived from that characterization. The study combines two strands: the grey literature produced by practitioners in the professional field, and the academic output retrieved through a structured search across four indexed databases, a process that retained 25 relevant studies, all published between 2020 and 2025. The grey literature defines design systems through three perspectives in circulation, the artefactual, the linguistic and the organizational, each descriptively rich yet unconnected to the others. The academic output concentrates on the technical and organizational manifestations of the phenomenon and is marked by scarcity, thematic fragmentation and an absence of integrative conceptual models. From the articulation of both characterizations follows an agenda structured in five lines, ranging from the proposal of integrative conceptual models to methodological reflection on how the object is studied. Characterization and agenda offer a starting point for the field's maturation as an object of academic research.

Researching Between Conviction and Constraint in Postgraduate Studies

Academic research is often narrated retrospectively as a coherent and linear journey: a clearly defined question, a carefully chosen method and a set of outcomes that appear to follow logically from the initial design. Yet for many postgraduate researchers, the lived experience of research is far messier. It is shaped...
