Abstract

Forests play a critical role in the natural global carbon cycle by capturing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere via photosynthesis. Therefore, carbon inventories serve as a baseline for assessing carbon capital supplied by REDD+ programs. However, Ethiopia does not have carbon inventories for every forest patch to monitor and enhance the carbon sequestration potential of the different forests. This study aimed to estimate the biomass carbon stock in woody plants of Tabotat Ericaceous Belt forests for climate change mitigation. Trees with diameter at breast height ≥ 1.5 cm were measured for their diameter and height. Both above- and below-ground biomass and carbon were estimated using pan-tropical and local allometric equations. The results were analyzed using PAST software, version 4.03, and Microsoft Excel, version 2016. The accumulation of forest biomass, including above- and below-ground, is approximately 54.78 tons per hectare, and the carbon content is 27.29 tons per hectare. The Tabotat Ericaceous Belt forest can store up to 100.53 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per hectare from the atmosphere, significantly contributing to regional climate change regulation. Erica arborea accumulated 40.14 ton per hectare of total biomass (above- and belowground biomass) and 20.07 of total carbon (above- and belowground carbon) in their bodies than other tree or shrub species. Rosa abyssinica Lindely stores 0.01 ton per hectare total biomass (above- and belowground biomass) of biomass and 0.005 total carbon (above- and belowground carbon). The future research should assess the unmeasured carbon pools, such as soil organic carbon, deadwood, and litter.

Changes in Carbon Stocks and the Economic Value of Forest Carbon in a Secondary Forest of Mt. Nacolod, Silago, Southern Leyte, Philippines

Tropical forests play a critical role in climate mitigation, yet long-term data on their carbon dynamics remain scarce, particularly in the Philippines. This study examines forest structure and carbon sequestration in a 1-hectare permanent plot established in a secondary forest on Mt. Nacolod, Southern Leyte, Philippin...

Dominant role of arbor forests in carbon stock enhancement: dynamics and associated factors of vegetation carbon storage in Pingxiang, China

Understanding the dynamics and associated factors of forest vegetation carbon storage is critical for assessing terrestrial carbon stocks and guiding regional carbon neutrality strategies. This study investigated how vegetation type, stand age, and forest origin jointly shape carbon storage in the subtropical forests o...

Aboveground Carbon Stocks and Soil Carbon–Nutrient Characteristics Across Edge, Intermediate, and Core Spatial Zones in Kaya Kauma Sacred Forest, Kenya

Sacred forests contribute to biodiversity conservation and forest carbon storage, yet quantitative information on their carbon and nutrient characteristics remains limited. This study quantified standing aboveground biomass (AGB) and aboveground carbon (AGC) stocks and characterized soil carbon–nutrient concentrations...

Stand structure drives vegetation carbon storage while soil texture regulates soil organic carbon in Nepalese mid-hill community forests

Forest carbon stocks in Nepal’s mid-hill community forests are influenced by interacting biotic and abiotic drivers; however, the relative importance of these drivers remains insufficiently understood. Vegetation carbon and soil organic carbon (SOC) were quantified across three forest types: Shorea robusta, Pinus roxbu...

Tree legume plantation strategy for bauxite-mined land recovery: 14-year aboveground carbon stock of Anadenanthera peregrina

Identifying suitable mined-land recovery strategies and native tree species capable of attaining high aboveground carbon stocks is important for climate change mitigation and meeting global restoration goals. Understanding how carbon stocks are distributed within stands can improve the design and evaluation of recovery...
