2026 · International journal of research and innovation in social science · 0 citations

Abstract

The emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in mental health introduces new opportunities to enhance psychological and counselling therapy. This article will be examining the evolution of therapy from traditional face-to-face approaches to AI-assisted methods within the field of psychology and counselling. Traditional therapy provides individualized human-centred care but is limited by accessibility, cost and reactive intervention. AI-assisted therapy enhances early detection, accessibility, and personalization while preserving ethical oversight through human involvement. Through a comparative discussion of traditional and AI-assisted approaches, this article examines the opportunities and challenges associated with the integration of AI into counselling and psychological care. The discussion highlights the potential for hybrid models that combine human empathy with AI efficiency, offering scalable, proactive and ethically responsible mental health support. Lastly, the ethical boundaries where AI should augment, not replace, professional judgment. Therapists remain responsible for clinical decisions and intervention outcomes. Addressing these challenges is critical to ensure that AI integration supports ethical, safe, and effective psychological care.
