Multi-Perspective Ar Interaction Through Robot Viewpoint Control

Abstract

Industrial environments increasingly deploy robots, creating a need for intuitive spatial interaction. Augmented Reality (AR) supports this, but can become difficult to use in large or occluded spaces where users lack direct views and fixed cameras are impractical. We address this by using a mobile robot as a live, repositionable viewpoint for AR workspace editing. We present a multi-perspective AR system and compare joystick and touch-based gesture control of a mobile robot viewpoint during AR object manipulation. In two user studies, we isolated task-dependent effects (navigation-only vs. manipulation-supported) and evaluated performance in realistic editing tasks. Results indicate that mobile robot viewpoints can support AR interaction in inaccessible areas without fixed camera infrastructure. Joystick control showed advantages for navigation-only viewpoint repositioning, whereas no clear performance difference emerged when viewpoint control supported a touch-based manipulation task. These findings indicate a task-dependent trade-off between control efficiency and interaction integration. We discuss design implications for task-dependent viewpoint control for AR interaction without fixed infrastructure.

Comparative Evaluation of an XR Pen-based Control Interface for Semi-Autonomous Mobile Robot Navigation in Service Environments

This paper presents a control interface that uses a commercial XR pen to command a semi-autonomous mobile robot in Augmented Reality (AR), and shows that the XR pen significantly outperforms the other methods in task selection time with the most consistent selections, supporting XR-based control as an intuitive alterna...

Towards Path-Creative Navigation: Robot Navigation through Embodied Interaction

Autonomous navigation in cluttered and constrained environments typically assumes a fixed environment and searches only for paths within existing free space. However, a route can be blocked by an articulated structure, a movable object, or a pedestrian, and reaching the goal may therefore require appropriate embodied i...

Investigating the Impact of a Virtual Background on Side-by-side AR Instructions for Procedural Tasks

Although Augmented Reality (AR) has been widely investigated for supporting procedural tasks, its adoption in real industrial environments remains limited. A major challenge concerns the accurate registration of virtual instructions onto real components, which can be affected by tracking inaccuracies, occlusion conflic...

Hardware-Free Robotics Laboratories in Mixed Reality

Teaching robotics relies on screen-based simulation, showing robot motion in an abstract coordinate frame rather than at real scale in the learner's own space, while access to physical hardware is limited by cost, safety, and scheduling constraints. We present MR-Robotics LAB, a mixed-reality (MR) platform that replays...

LLM-Based Waypoint Authoring via Augmented Reality for Human–Robot Interaction

Augmented reality (AR) can make robot programming more intuitive by letting users set motion parameters directly in the workspace. This paper extends AURaPath, an AR system for interactive 6-DoF waypoint determination on a UR10 collaborative robot using HoloLens2, with a voice modality for hands-free authoring. The voi...
