La construcción continuativa en la gramática estructural y funcional
Abstract
The continuative construction in Spanish shows two structural variants: a clausal one, introduced by a relative pronoun, and a nominal one, consisting of a phrase related to solidarity. This article offers, on the one hand, a syntactic description of the construction in comparison with similar structures, and on the other, an analysis of its position within sentence structure from both structural and functional grammatical perspectives. The conclusion is that it constitutes an incidental, extrapredicative, and subordinate construction, and that it belongs to the nominal category. Its distinctive features are threefold: (a) it appears in post-sentential position, (b) it involves internal anaphoric encapsulation, and (c) it has a predicative function with respect to the content of the preceding sentence.
