The Many Facets of Eudaimonia: Bridging the Gap Between Theory and Design Perspectives
Abstract
Eudaimonia denotes long-term well-being with a focus on doing well, combining themes of excellence, growth, meaning, and authenticity, in contrast to hedonic well-being, which has a short-term focus on feeling well. With roots in philosophy and extensive psychological research building upon the original philosophical concept, striving for eudaimonic well-being has long been recognized as one energy that drives us, and has recently emerged as a ‘grand challenge’ for HCI research. Its complexity requires a clear, shared methodological foundation for both researchers experienced in this area and those newly engaging with it. In this workshop, we aim to provide the room to collaboratively work toward this goal by building a shared conceptual model that helps establish common ground, identify synergies, and lay out future steps to further eudaimonic well-being through technology.
