Chitosan/Carboxymethyl cellulose edible coating loaded with aggregation-induced emission photosensitizers: A robust yet biocompatible antimicrobial film for Litchi preservation
Litchi deteriorates rapidly postharvest due to high moisture, enzymatic browning, and microbes. In this work, an eco-friendly, antimicrobial aggregation-induced emission photosensitizers-loaded chitosan/carboxymethyl cellulose (AIE-CS/CMC) coating film was developed and validated to significantly delayed pericarp browning, inhibited spoilage and retained most of the nutrients, extending litchi's shelf life by approximately eight days compared with the untreated water-blank control. These effects were attributed to the robust yet biocompatible photodynamic sterilization of AIE-CS/CMC coating film, coupled with excellent gas barrier and moisture control. Importantly, this coating film killed more than 95% Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Lactobacillus acidophilus, Staphylococcus aureus and Penicillium in suspension (106 CFU/mL), with outstanding mechanical performance (6.2 MPa tensile strength and 34.3% tensile elongation), low water vapor transmission rate (0.91 × 10−11 g·m−1·s−1·Pa−1), low ultraviolet light transmission rate (46.6% at 300 nm) and high water contact angle (78.48°). This AIE-CS/CMC coating could be considered a highly efficient postharvest quality management of litchi fruits.
We developed a biodegradable hydrogel-based packaging film from chitosan and polyvinyl alcohol. The film was integrated with epigallocatechin gallate, curcumin, or anthocyanins encapsulated in zeolitic imidazolate framework-8. Due to the synergistic effects between ZIF-8 and polyphenols, the films had enhanced mechanic...

To develop eco-friendly active packaging for food spoilage control, a Pickering emulsion (PPOEs) was prepared by co-encapsulating pomelo peel essential oil (PPO) and cinnamaldehyde (CIN) (1:1, v/v) using chitosan (CS) and carboxylated cellulose nanocrystals (C-CNCs) as composite stabilizers. Among the oil-to-water rati...

Postharvest spoilage of fresh fruits demands efficient bio-based packaging films. Here, chitosan/gelatin (CG) films were incorporated with β-cyclodextrin-encapsulated clove essential oil microcapsules (β-CD@CEO MCs) at varying loadings. The results suggested that CEO encapsulation occurred within β-CD cavities and hydr...
The objective of this study was to fabricate antibacterial pectin-based active films activated with trans-cinnamaldehyde delivered through a nanoemulsion system. A whey protein isolate-inulin complex-stabilized nanoemulsion was incorporated into high-methoxyl pectin (HMP) and low-methoxyl pectin (LMP) matrices at four...

This paper deals with the drawbacks of the single-component edible coatings through the development of an effective multi component nanocomposite dispersion system for postharvest preservation. A biodegradable edible coating made of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), guar gum (GG), and carrageenan (CGN) was developed and f...

Abstract Extracts from untreated and cold atmospheric plasma (CAP)-pretreated Scutellaria baicalensis were complexed with hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HP-β-CD) and incorporated into poly(vinyl alcohol)/chitosan (PVA/CS) electrospun nanofiber membranes for grape preservation. 1H NMR supported host–guest inclusion, wher...
