Abstract

Abstract This study evaluated the technological properties of Calophyllum brasiliense (guanandi) wood from a commercial plantation in Dueré, Tocantins. Anatomical, chemical, optical, physical, and mechanical properties were determined for eight-year-old trees. Anatomical analysis showed diffuse-porous wood with predominantly solitary vessels, axial parenchyma in bands, and heterocellular rays chiefly uniseriate. Along the radial axis, significant differences were observed between regions near the pith and bark in cell-wall thickness (4.2–4.9 µm), vessel element length (380–426 µm), and vessel (pore) diameter (130–250 µm). The contents of holocellulose (62 %), Klason lignin (29 %), total extractives (8 %), and ash (0.8 %) fall within the expected range for tropical species. Colorimetry indicated higher chroma near the pith and greater lightness near the bark, with classification into clusters 04, 19, and 22. Basic density was 585 kg/m3, while apparent density at 12 % moisture content was significantly higher near the pith (710 vs 685 kg/m3); volumetric shrinkage and swelling were 12.7 % and 14.7 %. Anisotropy coefficients distinguished juvenile from mature wood. Mechanical tests yielded: modulus of elasticity (MOE) 8.6 GPa; modulus of rupture (MOR) 80 MPa; compression parallel to grain 41 MPa; shear 13 MPa. C. brasiliense wood showed good strength but was classified as strength class D20 under the Brazilian standard (ABNT NBR 7190) due to relatively low MOE. Its values are comparable to commercially used species, indicating potential for secondary structural applications across industrial uses.

Anatomical and chemical characterization of the bark of two Amazonian tree species

Abstract The barks of Schizolobium parahyba var. amazonicum and Zanthoxylum ekmanii from the Brazilian Amazon were anatomically and chemically characterized to assess their potential as renewable industrial raw materials. Anatomically, both species showed distinct secondary phloem organization: S. parahyba var. amazoni...

Chemical and energetic properties of Calycophyllum spruceanum wood and charcoal from the Brazilian Amazon rainforest

The Calycophyllum spruceanum , known in Brazil, as “pau-mulato”, is a rapidly growing forest species native to the Amazon that produces dense wood used in floors, plywood, civil and naval construction and firewood, as it has high calorific value. However, studies on the species for energy production are scarce. T...

Exploring the Potential of the Tachigali vulgaris Wood from an Experimental Planting for Producing Charcoal in the Eastern Amazonia

Eastern Amazonia faces a shortage of plantations to fulfill both industrial and domestic energy needs, particularly in remote areas. The uniqueness of this study lies in assessing for the first time the impact of planting spacing (4.5, 6.0, 7.5, 9.0, 10.5, and 12.0 m 2 plant −1 ) and forking of Tachigali vulga...

Morphoanatomical and phytochemical traits of the terrestrial orchid Calanthe masuca with antioxidant activity

Calanthe masuca (D. Don) Lindl., a member of the family Orchidaceae, is native to Madagascar and tropical to subtropical Asia and is traditionally recognized for its therapeutic potential. Despite this, scientific evidence supporting its medicinal value remains limited. The present study aims to provide a comprehensive...

A Preliminary Physical Property Characterization of Artocarpus blancoi (Antipolo) from Maguindanao Province of Mindanao

This study examined the physical properties of Artocarpus blancoi wood, focusing on moisture content (MC), basic density (BD), and directional and volumetric shrinkage across tree samples and height levels. Three trees aged approximately 5 to 10 years, were sampled from Maguindanao del Norte in the Bangsamoro Autonomou...
