TL;DR

It is suggested that making interaction structure explicit is a promising direction for multimodal interaction understanding and provides a basis for future extension toward more complex multi-party and human-robot interaction scenarios.

Abstract

Human interaction understanding is usually studied separately for Human-Human Interaction (HHI), Human-Object Interaction (HOI), and Human-Robot Interaction (HRI), which limits progress toward more general interaction models. This paper investigates whether explicit structured interaction cues can support a shared multimodal representation across interaction settings. The proposed framework encodes pose, object, relation, and temporal cues into interaction tokens and aligns them with a multimodal backbone through a lightweight trainable interface. The current study evaluates this formulation on coarse-grained dyadic interaction understanding in two complementary settings: video-based HHI on the mutual-action subset of NTU RGB+D 120 and image-based HOI on HICO-DET. Preliminary results show that the framework can generate interaction-aware outputs in both settings, with substantially stronger performance on NTU RGB+D 120 than on HICO-DET. These findings suggest that making interaction structure explicit is a promising direction for multimodal interaction understanding and provides a basis for future extension toward more complex multi-party and human-robot interaction scenarios.

From Interaction to Relationship: Multidimensional Interaction Model for Human-Robot Systems

Current HRI models provide valuable insights into multimodal communication, interaction taxonomies, and temporal changes such as trust or engagement. However, these approaches remain largely interaction-centric and do not adequately explain how repeated multimodal interactions develop into lasting human-robot relations...

Harnessing Multimodal Large Language Models for Training-Free Human-Object Interaction Detection

Human-object interaction (HOI) detection aims to localize human-object pairs and recognize their interactions. Traditional supervised methods perform strongly but rely on task-specific training. Recent multimodal large language models (MLLMs) offer a promising route to training-free HOI detection through their broad vi...

Multi-Model Large Language Models for Human-Robot Interaction

Human–robot interaction (HRI) becomes challenging when robots must interpret human instructions expressed through multiple forms of communication. People often combine speech, pointing gestures, visual cues, and contextual information, and these signals may be incomplete, ambiguous, or inconsistent. Multimodal large la...

Social Intuition vs. Machine Reasoning: Anticipating Human-Robot Interaction from multiple modalities

Anticipating whether a person will interact from one's own perspective is a highly intuitive task for humans, that relies on a combination of cues. We investigate how humans perform at predicting a person's intention to interact from a service robot's point of view, using pose-only or full video input, then benchmark d...
