Abstract

Measurements from NASA's OSIRIS-REx spacecraft revealed (101955) Bennu as a member of the active asteroid class. These objects exhibit transient, comet-like activity, commonly producing particle trails best observed from a vantage point close to the projected orbit plane. Accordingly, we obtained deep, high resolution observations of Bennu at orbit plane crossing in 2023, using the Hubble Space Telescope. We find no evidence for ejected material, and place model-dependent limits to the mass loss of dM/dt<0.12 kg/s from an analysis of the near-nucleus surface brightness profiles and dM/dt<6e-3 kg/s from the absence of a measurable particle trail. These limits are one to two orders of magnitude smaller than rates of mass loss measured remotely in other active asteroids and raise the possibility that low activity in many or most asteroids might fall beneath the prevailing thresholds offered by remote observations. Taking a still smaller mass loss rate estimated from OSIRIS-REx data, we calculate a specific rate L = 1e-7 kg/km2/s and extrapolate to the entire main-belt asteroid population. We estimate a cumulative dust production rate 850/r_min**1/2 [kg/s], where r_min is the minimum asteroid radius in meters. For r_min>1 m, this is<1% to 10% of the rate needed to sustain the Zodiacal cloud in steady state.

Aarmed with Data: Bumps, Outflows, and Disk-like Emission in TDE 2025aarm

The origin of the optical emission in tidal disruption events (TDEs) remains one of the major outstanding questions in the field, in part due to the limited number of nearby events with high-cadence monitoring to track their evolving photometric and spectroscopic properties. We present multi-wavelength observations of...

MAIN ASTRONOMICAL, ORBITAL AND PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF NEPTUNE'S MOON TRITON

The study of icy worlds on the outskirts of the Solar System is one of the modern directions of planetary science. A special place in this search is occupied by Triton, the largest satellite of the planet Neptune. It differs significantly from other large satellites of the Solar System. Its unique retrograde and highly...

Photometric Study of the Fastest-rotating Near-Earth Asteroid 2024 XA1

Near-Earth asteroid 2024 XA1 was discovered on 2024 December 3 at 05:55 UT by the 2.3 m Bok Telescope of the University of Arizona. At 07:50 UT on the same day, subsequent orbit refinement confirmed a 100% impact probability, with atmospheric entry predicted at approximately 16:15 UT over eastern Siberia. We obtained o...

Resolved Structure and Orbital Motion of a Localized 1 au-scale Dust Accumulation in the Protoplanetary Disk around TW Hya

We present the results of high-resolution ($\sim1$~au) Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the TW~Hya protoplanetary disk in the Band 6 dust continuum, as well as the \ce{^13CO} and \ce{C^18O} J=2--1 emission lines. The primary focus of this study is to investigate the kinematics, intern...

Nordic-based observations of binary asteroid (163693) Atira reveal a hydrated CM chondrite composition

We present photometric, spectroscopic, and polarimetric observations of (163693) Atira collected on the night of 05 March 2024. A dual-band lightcurve acquired in the V and R_C filters using the Mets\"ahovi Observatory (L08) in Kirkkonummi, Finland spans nearly 8~hours. From these measurements we estimate a V-R_C = 0.4...

The Fast Transient Foreground Fog of LSST

Studies with 1-m class telescopes have now established that glints from satellites and space debris are the main obstacles to searches for sub-minute optical transients. Here, we report a study of this foreground using observations from the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) with the Simonyi 8.4-m telescope at the...
