Abstract
The selective capture of specific anions from complex wastewater remains a critical challenge in resource recovery. Although cationic polymers can adsorb anions through ion exchange, the influence of the spatial arrangement of the functional group on their selectivity is not well understood. In this study, two imidazolium-based cationic polymers with ortho- and para-substituted spatial arrangements (denoted as CPN-oVIm-Cl and CPN-pVIm-Cl) were synthesized, and their efficacy in the selective adsorption of perrhenate was comparatively studied. Both materials exhibit high adsorption capacities for perrhenate, reaching over 1200 mg g-1, along with rapid adsorption kinetics. A key finding is that CPN-pVIm-Cl shows significantly superior selectivity toward ReO4 - in the presence of multicharged competing anions such as SO4 2- and AsO4 3-, compared to CPN-oVIm-Cl. Mechanistic studies indicate that the uniformly distributed charges in the para-substituted polymer enhance specific recognition, whereas the locally concentrated charges in the ortho-substituted analogue reduce selectivity. This work highlights the spatial arrangement of functional groups as a key factor in tuning ion selectivity, offering a new perspective for designing high-performance adsorbents.
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) are persistent contaminants that are widely detected in aquatic environments and are difficult to remove because of their stable carbon–fluorine bonds and amphiphilic structures. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), with high surface areas, tailorable porous frameworks, diverse m...
Given the highly dispersed occurrence of rhenium in the natural environment, it is commonly encountered in conjunction with other minerals and primarily occurs as perrhenate ions (ReO4–) in the acidic waste solutions produced by nonferrous metallurgical operations. The advancement of techniques for the efficient, eco...

An anionic covalent organic framework (COF) was constructed using 2,5-diaminobenzenesulfonic acid as an ionic building unit. The incorporation of sulfonate functionalities endows the framework with permanent anionic sites, thereby enabling selective ion-exchange interactions with cationic species. The adsorption perfor...

Polyphenol-derived metal coordination polymers (MCPs) are promising for constructing hydrophilic and underwater antifouling membrane interfaces. However, conventional pH-regulated fabrication of MCPs is often accompanied by metal-ion hydrolysis, which consumes available metal ions and interferes with effective MCP form...

Bromide contamination in water sources is a growing health concern because it can generate carcinogenic disinfection byproducts during conventional water treatment. However, the selective removal of bromide from reverse osmosis (RO) permeate remains challenging. Herein, we report a benzothiazole-functionalized covalent...
