Investigation of a natural compound obtained from Moringa oleifera seeds, called Moringa isothiocyanate-1 (MIC-1), using adult zebrafish indicates that it may be a promising bioactive compound for developing new approaches to manage anxiety and seizures.

Abstract

Simple Summary Anxiety and seizures are common neurological conditions that can greatly affect quality of life, and current medicines may cause unwanted effects such as drowsiness, sedation, and dependence. Therefore, new treatment options are needed. This study investigated a natural compound obtained from Moringa oleifera seeds, called Moringa isothiocyanate-1 (MIC-1), using adult zebrafish, a small laboratory fish commonly used in biomedical research. MIC-1, up to 0.5 mg/mL, did not cause acute toxic effects and did not impair normal movement. MIC-1 delayed the onset of experimentally induced seizures and reduced anxiety-like behavior, including anxiety caused by alcohol withdrawal. These findings suggest that MIC-1’s effects may involve brain systems responsible for controlling neuronal inhibition and mood. Computer-based analyses supported the possible interaction between MIC-1 and neurotransmitter receptors. Overall, these results indicate that MIC-1 may be a promising bioactive compound for developing new approaches to manage anxiety and seizures. However, further studies are required to confirm its safety, effectiveness, and possible use in humans.

Anticonvulsant effects of non-pharmaceutical treatments in bang-sensitive D. melanogaster mutants

Epilepsy impacts 50 million people worldwide, and approximately 30% of people with epilepsy are unresponsive to treatments. Antiepileptic medications (AEDs) can be costly and may cause harmful side-effects, calling for the development of novel, non-pharmaceutical treatments. We conducted this study to determine whether...

Cannabigerol, a minor phytocannabinoid, prevents behavioral changes induced by psychotomimetic drugs.

Cannabigerol (CBG) is a phytocannabinoid present in the plant Cannabis sativa that, similar to cannabidiol (CBD), does not cause psychotomimetic effects. It has shown potential therapeutic effects for relieving pain, inflammation, and anxiety, and it possesses antioxidant and neuroprotective properties. To date, few st...

Single ayahuasca administration mitigates long-term behavioral and neurochemical effects of early-life stress in rats.

Pharmacotherapy for depression is commonly prescribed, yet fewer than half of patients achieve remission with a single treatment. Many also experience intolerable side effects, highlighting the need for new treatment approaches. Classic psychedelics interact with the serotonin (5-HT) receptor class and are therefore st...

Neurobehavioral and Neurochemical Effect of Azadirachta Indica on Stress Induced Anxiety in Mice

Background: Anxiety disorders represent a major global mental health burden characterized by exaggerated fear and stress responses. Neurochemical imbalances involving GABA, serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline underlie these conditions. Synthetic anxiolytics such as benzodiazepines and SSRIs, though effective, often...

EXPLORING THE NEUROBEHAVIOURAL EFFECTS OF BUTTERFLYPEA FLOWER EXTRACT IN ZEBRAFISH [DANIO RERIO] MODEL

The side effects of pharmaceutical sedatives become a growing clinical concern, so natural alternatives are gaining traction. This study investigates the neuropharmacological potential of butterfly pea (Clitoria ternatea) flower extracts prepared through both hot and cold methods using adult zebrafish as a vertebrate m...

Preliminary Data Regarding the Neurobehavioural Modulatory Effect of Acmella Oleracea L. Extract in an Zebrafish Model of Autism Spectrum Disorder

It is suggested that VPA-treated zebrafish show an increased frequency of aggressive and anxiety-like behaviours, as compared to controls, and acute AO extract treatment was not able to modulate aggressive behaviour in VPA-treated or in healthy zebrafish.
