End-to-End Fog-Based Monitoring System for Smart Greenhouse Agriculture: From Sensor Design to Data Visualization

Sep 2026 · International Symposium on Networks, Computers and Communications · pp. 1-8 · 0 citations · 7 references

Abstract

This paper presents the design and deployment of a fully customized fog-based monitoring system for smart greenhouse agriculture. Unlike most off-the-shelf solutions, our system was built from the ground up: from the design and fabrication of sensors and actuators to the implementation of a real-time fog computing architecture and data visualization interface. The goal was to create an end-to-end, scalable, and cost-effective solution capable of supporting decision-making in controlled agricultural environments. The engineered sensors have a battery life of 12 months and a unit cost of $12.67, highlighting the system's affordability and long-term usability. We detail the engineering process, hardware and software integration, and the challenges faced during the system's deployment. Initial results demonstrate the system's effectiveness in collecting, processing, and visualizing environmental data, enabling proactive intervention to optimize plant growth and resource usage.
