AN EMPIRICAL INVESTIGATION OF GREEN ORGANIZATIONAL CULTURE AND ENVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY: MEDIATING EFFECTS OF ORGANIZATIONAL CITIZENSHIP BEHAVIOUR TOWARDS THE ENVIRONMENT IN LISTED INDIAN BANKS
Abstract
Despite growing interest in green banking practices, limited studies have examined the behavioral mechanism through which Green Organizational Culture (GOC) enhances environmental sustainability in Indian banking institutions. The study investigates the direct and mediating relationships among GOC, Organizational Citizenship Behaviour Towards the Environment (OCBE), and Environmental Sustainability (ES) in the context of listed Indian banks in Punjab. Primary data were collected from 660 employee respondents who work in Public and Private Sector Listed Indian Bank in Punjab. The data were analyzed using PLS-SEM through SmartPLS. The reliability and validity of each construct were assessed using established criteria, including internal consistency and convergent validity. The findings reveal that GOC has a significant and positive impact on OCBE, indicating that environmentally oriented cultural values encourage employees to engage in voluntary pro-environmental behaviours. Additionally, GOC significantly influences Environmental Sustainability, demonstrating its direct contribution to sustainability outcomes. OCBE is also found to have a strong positive effect on Environmental Sustainability, highlighting the critical role of employee-driven environmental initiatives. Furthermore, mediation analysis confirms that OCBE partially mediates the relationship between GOC and ES, suggesting that green culture enhances sustainability both directly and indirectly through employee behaviour. The study contributes to the literature by integrating cultural, behavioural, and sustainability perspectives within the Indian banking sector. It also provides practical implications for managers and policymakers to foster sustainability by strengthening green organizational culture and promoting employee participation in environmental initiatives.
