The Role of Organizational Capability and Operational Performance: The Mediating Role of Sustainability Commitment: Evidence from Pakistan Food Industry.

Abstract

Increasing pressure on organizations to improve operational efficiency while achieving sustainable development has highlighted the importance of organizational capabilities and sustainable development through operational performance. This study examines the relationships among organizational capability, operational performance, sustainable commitment, and organizational sustainable development in the food industry of Pakistan. Specifically, the study investigates whether organizational capability contributes to organizational sustainable development directly and indirectly through operational performance and sustainable commitment. A quantitative research design was adopted, and data were collected through a structured questionnaire from 210 respondents working in the Pakistani food industry. The respondents included staff, managers, and senior managers. The data were analysed using SPSS and PLS-SEM to assess the measurement and structural models.  The study contributes theoretically by integrating organizational capability, operational performance, sustainable commitment, and organizational sustainable development within a single framework. Practically, the findings highlight the importance of strengthening managerial, technological, human, and operational capabilities while embedding sustainability into organizational strategies. For the Pakistani food industry, the study emphasizes the potential importance of improving operational efficiency, reducing waste, strengthening sustainability commitment, and developing organizational capabilities to support long-term sustainable development.  The findings showed acceptable reliability for all constructs. Sustainability commitment had a significant positive effect on operational performance, while organizational capability showed a marginally positive trend.
