Abstract

The effectiveness, security, and sustainability of transportation systems are significantly influenced by urban intersections. To assess and improve intersection performance, sophisticated analytical tools are needed due to the quick increase in traffic demand. Because of its ability to simulate intricate traffic interactions and driver behavior, traffic microsimulation—especially PTV VISSIM—has become one of these tools' most popular.  The use of PTV VISSIM in intersection analysis and improvement is reviewed in this paper methodically and critically. A PRISMA-based structured systematic literature review (SLR) methodology was used. The review covers several important topics such as intersection types, performance measures, traffic signal control algorithms, calibration and validation techniques and data collection methods. Results indicate that VISSIM is a flexible and reliable platform for traffic operations evaluation, but accurate results are contingent on reliable calibration techniques and high quality field data. The study further highlights crucial research gaps such as lack of integration of real-time data systems and lack of standard calibration procedures. This work offers a conceptual assessment framework and organized results to help guide future research and practical application to improve intersection performance.
