Certified Organic Production: a Bibliometric Study on the Creation and Global Dissemination of Knowledge

Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study is to present a bibliometric analysis of scientific production on organic certification worldwide, considering the creation and distribution of knowledge.   Theoretical Framework: This study adopts bibliometrics as an analytical approach to assess the development, structure, and dissemination of scientific knowledge in the field of organic certification.   Method: The study analyzed 46 articles indexed in Scopus and Web of Science, published between 2014 and 2024. Data were processed and visualized using VOSviewer software. Based on this analysis, thematic groups were established to categorize the main research lines and emerging topics within the field of organic certification.   Results and Discussion: Findings show a growing interest in organic certification research, with a notable surge in 2024. Brazil and the United States were the leading contributors, and studies were evenly distributed between qualitative and quantitative approaches. The main disciplines were agricultural and biological sciences (45%), social sciences (22%), and economics (13%). Six thematic groups were identified, including consolidated topics such as organic farming practices, marketing and willingness to pay, and food security, as well as emerging areas related to environmental impact, regulation, and European influence in organic production.   Research Implications: The analysis evidences that growth in certified organic production is a multidisciplinary field that is in expansion, yet needs further research in regions where scientific production is low.   Originality/Value: These findings provide a comprehensive view of current knowledge and guide future research on sustainability, certification, and its socioeconomic and environmental impact.
