An Episode of Submandibular Pyogranulomatous Inflammation in a Buffalo (Bubalus Bubalis): A Case Report

Abstract

A two-and-a-half-year-old buffalo with a history of a chronic (3-4 months) proliferative, large, multinodular, firm abscess located caudo-ventral to the right ear base, not directly attached to the mandible, was presented to the teaching veterinary clinical complex, Palampur, Himachal Pradesh. The growth was removed surgically, and the tissue was processed for cytology and histopathology. Grossly, there were multiple nodules, and the cut surface of the growth appeared creamish white. Impression smear revealed abundant neutrophils and macrophages engulfing bacteria. Microscopically, multiple granulomas were observed, with bacterial colonies and club-shaped products surrounded by strong neutrophilic reactions. Based on clinical signs, cytology and histopathology, the present case was diagnosed as pyogranulomas probably due to actinobacillosis in a buffalo.
