Language has always been used all over the world as a tool for fostering unity and giving ethnic nationalities a sense ofbelonging.Usually, ethnic nationalitieshave clamoured for recognitioninthe scheme of socio-cultural engineering, to avoid the backlash of extinction, which leads to loss of identity through non-usage of their languages. Many countries of the world adopt national languages because of their intrinsic and extrinsic values against the backdrop of ‘imposed’ foreign languages like English and French found mostly in Sub-Saharan Africa, which are products of the slave trade and colonialism. For Nigeria to have a veritable national language, it has to embrace language planning, which is a deliberate effort to influence the function, structure, or acquisition of languages or language variety within a speech community. This study used a qualitative analysis of the subject-matter. This enabled us to arrive at a conclusion that our inability to have a truly national language is as a result of the promotion of ethnic agenda by stakeholders. The paper concludes that for Nigeria to have a truly national language, the people must eschew ethnic agenda which has become the Achilles heel of the socio-linguistic engineering in the country.
