Sep 2026 · Journal of the New Economic Association · 0 citations

Abstract

Exploring the main range of modern digital currencies in their article, M. Yu. Golovnin and S. A. Andryushin “Digital currencies and the challenge of their use” (Journal of the New Economic Association, 2026, 3) convincingly reveal the differences in their functional purpose, advantages, risks, and applications. The authors justify their place in national monetary and credit systems and the global monetary system. At the same time, the presented study can be meaningfully supplemented by a consideration of the phenomenon of private digital currencies, its theoretical understanding from the perspective of whether these currencies represent an independent form of money. The answer to this question has not only theoretical, but also a practical signifi cance, since it mostly determines the nature of the regulatory reaction, the possibility of expanding the circulation area of private digital currencies and the ways they are used. Based on a comparison of different approaches to the study of the essence of money, a comparative analysis of different types of private digital currencies, this article shows that their “monetary status” can be recognized in a limited, network and institutionally determined sense. At the same time, it is noted that if the monetary status of unsecured cryptocurrencies remains the most controversial, then stablecoins have a more pronounced functional “moneyness”. As a result of comparing the basic characteristics of central banks’ digital currencies as fiat digital money and private digital currencies, this article has established that the best option for their interaction is coexistence and consistent institutionalization, respectively, the prospects for the development of national monetary systems are associated with its hybridization, in which all types of fiat money and private digital currencies will coexist and compete.
