The use of immunohistochemical markers in differentiating pleomorphic adenoma from mucoepidermoid carcinoma enables the establishment of more precise prognostic parameters, contributing to clinical decision-making and improving therapeutic planning.
Abstract
Salivary gland neoplasms range from benign to malignant behavior, requiring precise diagnosis. Pleomorphic Adenoma (PA) is the most common benign tumor, whereas Mucoepidermoid Carcinoma (MEC) stands out among malignant lesions. Distinguishing between the two is essential for proper clinical management. The aim of this research is to conduct a comparative analysis between pleomorphic adenoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma. This is an integrative literature review, qualitative and descriptive in nature, based on 21 articles indexed in Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect, published between 2020 and 2025. Articles published in Portuguese and English directly related to the topic were included, while undergraduate theses, dissertations, articles older than five years, and publications in other languages or unrelated to the study’s objective were excluded. The literature highlights the importance of microscopic analysis and specific markers for accurate diagnosis of salivary gland pathologies, as MEC may present similarly to PA—particularly in well-differentiated lesions—and displays wide clinical variability. Thus, the use of immunohistochemical markers in differentiating pleomorphic adenoma from mucoepidermoid carcinoma enables the establishment of more precise prognostic parameters, contributing to clinical decision-making and improving therapeutic planning.

Actinic cheilitis (AC) is a premalignant lesion caused by chronic exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation and is considered a risk factor for squamous cell carcinoma. Studies indicate a higher prevalence of the lesion in individuals exposed to the sun for long periods, such as rural workers and fishermen. This paper rev...

BACKGROUND
Syringocystadenoma papilliferum (SCAP) and tubular apocrine adenoma (TAA)/papillary eccrine adenoma (PEA) are rare, benign sweat gland tumors that most commonly co-occur in the setting of a nevus sebaceus. Some hypothesize that these tumors exist on a spectrum; however, their co-existence without a nevus seb...

Introduction: Desquamative gingivitis (DG) is a descriptive clinical term characterized by erythema, epithelial desquamation, erosions, and pain in the gingival mucosa. It is not an isolated entity, but a non-specific manifestation predominantly associated with autoimmune mucocutaneous dermatoses, such as oral lichen p...

Salivary gland neoplasms are significant lesions in oral and maxillofacial pathology that exhibit diverse clinical and biological behaviors. Therefore, identifying novel markers capable of predicting the behavior of salivary gland tumors is crucial. CD138 or syndecan-1 is the primary syndecan expressed in epithelial ce...
