Abstract

This study examines the factors influencing the adoption of modern agricultural technologies (MT) among rice farmers. The analysis focuses on various technologies, including tractors, power trailers, shallow machines, sprayers, and fertilizers. Data from farmers in the study area reveal that the use of sprayers is universal, while the adoption of other machinery like tractors and power trailers remains limited, with average usage rates indicating varied technology adoption patterns. The study highlights the factors that contribute to the adoption and non-adoption of these technologies. Key reasons for adopting modern technologies include increased profits, environmental benefits, and long-term land productivity. On the other hand, high costs were the primary barrier to adoption, with farmers perceiving these technologies as expensive. A logit regression model was employed to analyze the relationship between socio-economic factors and the likelihood of adopting modern technologies. The results indicate that age, education, farm size, income, and willingness to pay for modern technologies significantly influence adoption decisions. Younger farmers, those with higher levels of education, and larger farm sizes are more likely to adopt new technologies. In contrast, older farmers and those with smaller farms tend to be less inclined to adopt. The study also found that farmers with higher family incomes and better access to extension services are more likely to adopt modern technologies. Additionally, experience in rice production and training on new technologies were positively associated with adoption. The findings suggest that the adoption of modern technologies can significantly enhance rice productivity and profitability. However, the study emphasizes the need for cost reduction, awareness campaigns, and targeted training programs to encourage wider adoption, particularly among small-scale farmers. Effective policy interventions should focus on making modern agricultural technologies more accessible and affordable to improve overall agricultural efficiency.
