Abstract
Runoff and calved ice volumes from the Greenland Ice Sheet are well constrained, but quantifying the associated suspended sediment flux remains challenging. Here we present near‐terminus observations from three glacierized fjords in southeast Greenland, combining full‐depth turbidity profiles and current velocity from summer 2024 to evaluate sediment export. We identify extensive subsurface sediment plumes from marine‐terminating glaciers which are undetectable using remote sensing approaches and underrepresented in fjord sediment‐core reconstructions. Sediment cores document an exponential increase in sediment accumulation rates from glacier‐distal to glacier‐proximal coring sites. Therefore, the scarcity of sediment cores collected in the immediate vicinity of glacier termini suggests that sediment export from marine‐terminating glaciers has likely been systematically underestimated. Our findings underscore the importance of direct observations for quantifying sediment transport in glacierized fjords and suggest the Greenland Ice Sheet contributes more sediment to ocean margins than previously assumed.
Vegetation greening and abrupt permafrost thaw are reshaping sediment dynamics across the Tibetan Plateau, yet their relative effects on sediment delivery remain poorly quantified. Here we show that retrogressive thaw slumps are disproportionately important sediment sources, with erosion rates two to three orders of ma...

Turbidity currents are increasingly recognised as a key mechanism for transporting sediment into the deep ocean, yet their structure, behavior, and long‐term impact in Antarctic submarine canyons remain poorly understood owing to a lack of direct observations. Using a year‐long mooring deployed in Wilson Canyon, west...

Past variability of the Greenland Ice Sheet (GrIS) and the role it plays in global ice dynamics is poorly constrained due to a paucity of proximal climate records. With sea level rise patterns controlled by the source and relative timing of ice sheet melt, understanding the response of individual ice sheets to climate...
Soil erosion is an increasing environmental problem in the Lake Victoria Basin (LVB), resulting in the transfer of sediment, nutrients and contaminants from terrestrial landscapes to aquatic ecosystems. These land-to-lake transfers have implications for soil fertility, water quality, ecosystem functioning and food secu...

Offshore freshened groundwater (OFG) is a significant yet underexplored component of the global water cycle, and its spatial distribution, particularly its links to past glacial processes, remains poorly constrained. The southeastern North Sea, characterized by extensive tunnel valley networks, provides an ideal settin...
