Model Predictive Control-Based HAF for Harmonic Mitigation in Hybrid Energy Storage Systems
Abstract
In this paper, two control strategies, SMC and MPC, are investigated for a QBC with an HAF to address harmonic rejection and improve power quality in an HESS connected to the power grid. In the proposed system, PV and battery energy sources are connected to the high-gain QBC and voltage source inverter, which allows power transfer and control of the DC-link voltage. SMC and MPC strategies are applied to control the HAF and to decrease the harmonic distortion in various system operating conditions. A complete test-bed simulation has been created in MATLAB/Simulink to determine the performance of the proposed system. A comparative assessment is conducted of the harmonic mitigation capability and dynamic response indicators such as rise time, peak time, settling time, and final steady-state error, which provide insight into waveform quality and control effectiveness. The simulation results indicate that both controllers achieve good results in enhancing system stability and waveform quality. However, in terms of dynamic performance, the M.P.C.-based system has superior rise time, peak time, settling time, and steady-state error compared to SMC. Furthermore, MPC has the following advantages: harmonic compensation is better, the output current THD is reduced from 3.85% to 3.34%, and the output voltage THD is reduced from 4.04% to 3.81%. The results indicate that the MPC-controlled HAF is a more effective solution to improve the power quality, voltage regulation, and transient performance of HES Systems.
