Abstract

We prove that, for every fixed $d\geq 2$ and $\varepsilon>0$, the $\mathbb{F}_q$-points of a geometrically irreducible reflexive plane curve of degree $d$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$ can be covered by at most $\left(\frac{1}{d}+\varepsilon\right)q$ many $\mathbb{F}_q$-lines, provided that $q$ is sufficiently large. The same conclusion holds for $\mathbb{F}_q$-irreducible curves that are not geometrically irreducible, since they have only $O(d^2)$ $\mathbb{F}_q$-points. In particular, for sufficiently large $q$, the bound applies to every $\mathbb{F}_q$-irreducible plane curve of degree $d$ when $\operatorname{char}(\mathbb{F}_q)>d$. Our bound is asymptotically sharp. The proof combines Entin's Chebotarev density theorem for varieties over finite fields with the Pippenger--Spencer theorem on covers of nearly regular hypergraphs.

New algebraic points on covers of elliptic curves

For a smooth projective curve $C/\mathbb{Q}$ of genus $\geq 2$ and $L/\mathbb{Q}$ an extension, we write $C(L)_{\text{new}}=\{P\in C(L):\mathbb{Q}(P)=L\}$. Recent work of Khawaja and Siksek conjectures that this set is empty for $100\%$ of degree $n$ number fields $L$, when ordered by absolute discriminant. Moreover, t...

Rank stability of elliptic curves over $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ in residue classes

Fix a prime $\ell$. Let $K = \mathbb{F}_q(t)$ be a global function field such that $\gcd(q,6) = 1$ and $q \equiv 1 \pmod \ell$. Let $E$ be a non-isotrivial elliptic curve over $K$. Given a fixed monic polynomial $Q$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$, and assuming some mild conditions on $E$, we show that the rank of $E$ does not cha...

Points and their multiples on curves in powers of simple abelian varieties

Let $G$ be a simple abelian variety of dimension $g \in \mathbb{N}$ defined over $\mathbb{Q}^\mathrm{alg}$ and let $C_1, C_2 \subseteq G^N(\mathbb{C})$ be irreducible closed algebraic curves with $N \geq 3$. Further assume that at least one of $C_1$ and $C_2$ is not defined over $\mathbb{Q}^\mathrm{alg}$. Suppose that...

Functions with comparable integrals on all k-planes

Let $d \ge 2$ and $1 \le k \le d-1$. We show that if $f:\mathbb{R}^d\to\mathbb{R}$ is nonnegative and measurable and $0<m\le M<\infty$ then it is impossible that on almost all affine $k$-planes $P$ in $\mathbb{R}^d$ the integral of $f$ on $P$ lies between $m$ and $M$. Let $G = \mathbb{Z}^k \times \{0\}^{d-k}$. Using $m...

Unipotent Selmer dimensions for CM curves via Iwasawa loci

Let $X/\mathbb{Q}$ be a smooth, projective, geometrically integral curve of genus $g \geq 2$ with a point $ b \in X(\mathbb{Q})$ and geometrically CM Jacobian. Fix an odd prime $p$ of good reduction, and let $U$ be the \'etale pro-unipotent $\mathbb{Q}_p$-fundamental group of $X$. We prove, for all $n \gg 0,$ the inequ...

An Exact Counting Formula for the Mutual Position of Two Plane Conics

Let $q$ be an odd prime power, and $\mathcal{C}, \mathcal{D}$ be two smooth plane conics defined over $\mathbb{F}_q$ with transversal intersection. We present an exact formula for the number of points in $\mathbb{P}^2(\mathbb{F}_q)$ that are internal/external to $\mathcal{C}$ and internal/external to $\mathcal{D}$. Thi...
