Abstract

Extending the notions of Kneser graphs and Schrijver graphs, we define the $G$-stable Kneser graph $KG(G,k)$ (where $k\geq 2$ and $G$ is a graph on $n\geq 2k$ vertices) as the graph whose vertices are the $k$-element independent sets in $G$ and whose edges join pairs of disjoint independent sets. The well-known result of Lov\'{a}sz on the chromatic number of Kneser graphs implies that $\chi(KG(G,k)) \leq n-2k+2$ for any $G$. We call $G$ $k$-tight if equality holds, and we study the following question: Which graphs are $k$-tight? A result of Daneshpajouh et al.\ implies a characterization of $2$-tight graphs. We prove a necessary condition for a graph to be $k$-tight for $k\geq 3$ which extends this characterization, and we conjecture it to be sufficient. Another result gives a lower bound to the chromatic number of the $G$-stable Kneser graphs when $G$ is a disjoint union of cycles. We use this result to give a short proof of the fact that $4$-regular graphs on $3k$ vertices consisting of two vertex-disjoint cycles and $k$ cycles of length $3$ admit an independent set of size $k$.

Counting cographs in locally dense graphs

An $n$-vertex graph $G$ is $(\rho, d)$-dense if for all $U \subseteq V(G)$ of size at least $\rho n$, the induced subgraph $G[U]$ contains at least $\frac{d}{2}|U|^2$ edges. In 2010, partly motivated by the theory of quasirandomness, Kohayakawa, Nagle, R\"{o}dl, and Schacht conjectured that, for any fixed graph $F$, th...

The strong (non-induced) Tur\'an numbers

In this paper we introduce and explore the following new graph invariant: For a graph $G$ on $k$ vertices, $G \neq K_k$, let $st(n,G)$ denote the maximum number of edges in a graph of order $n$ which does not contain any subgraph on $k$ vertices strictly containing $G$. A basic relation to classical Tur\'an numbers is...

Spectral Extremal Graphs without a $K_k$-Factor

Let $k\ge 3$ and let $n=km$. A $K_k$-factor in an $n$-vertex graph is a collection of $m$ vertex-disjoint copies of $K_k$ that covers the entire vertex set. We determine the maximum adjacency spectral radius of an $n$-vertex graph containing no $K_k$-factor when $m\ge 2k-1$. More precisely, we prove that every such gra...

Sharp linear Tur\'an remainders for cycle and edge extremality

For a graph $G$, let $e(G)$ denote the number of edges of $G$, and let $c(G)$ be the number of distinct cycles in $G$. Morrison, Roberts and Scott asked whether, for every fixed graph $H$ and all large $n$, some $n$-vertex $H$-free graph maximizes both $e(G)$ and $c(G)$. In this paper, we show that the answer is no for...

Graph Sensitivity of Cartesian Products with Matched Bridges

For a graph $G$, let $f_t(G)$ denote the minimum of the maximum degree of an induced subgraph with $\alpha(G)+t$ vertices, where $\alpha(G)$ is the independence number, and write $f(G)=f_1(G)$. Huang's theorem gives $f(Q_k)\ge\lceil\sqrt{k}\rceil$ for the $k$-dimensional hypercube $Q_k$. We extend this lower bound to C...

Kriesell's conjecture for infinite graphs

Let $G$ be a graph and $S\subseteq V(G)$ be a subset of vertices. An $S$-Steiner tree $T$ of $G$ is a tree of $G$ which contains $S$ in its vertex set $V(T)$. Kriesell conjectured that for every $2k$-edge-connected subset $S\subseteq V(G)$ in a finite connected graph $G$, there exist $k$ pairwise edge-disjoint $S$-Stei...
