Michael Amaladoss: A Countercultural Theologian
Abstract
This essay introduces Father Michael Amaladoss, SJ, with a focus on the praxis-oriented framework that shapes his theological thought. Central to this is his countercultural stance, which is best understood within its broader historical, intellectual, and theological context. Father Amaladoss critiques academism—the prioritization of abstract and institutionalized theological discourse—and rejects intellectualism, arguing that theology should be grounded in lived experience and concrete human realities rather than abstract reflection. The essay also explores Father Amaladoss’s key concept of the duplex ordo cognitionis ("twofold order of knowledge"), which distinguishes between existence (lived reality) and reflection (theoretical analysis). For him, existence holds primacy, while reflection serves to deepen and clarify lived experience, not to dominate or control it.
