Abstract
Dimer acceptors are attractive for organic solar cells (OSCs) owing to their combination of stability and high efficiency, yet the efficiency of dimer-based binary devices has long stagnated below 20%. The limitation stems from weak intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) and poor locally excited/charge-transfer (LE/CT) state hybridization, which are direct consequences of the canceled dipole moments in symmetric dimer architectures. In this work, we adopt an asymmetric-isomerization strategy to design two novel dual-asymmetric isomeric dimer acceptors QCl-YF and QF-YCl. Compared with QCl-YF, QF-YCl exhibits an enhanced ICT effect as evidenced by a larger electron-hole spatial separation, which promotes LE/CT hybridization and enables more efficient carrier dynamics. Moreover, the stronger electrostatic potential and dipole moment of QF-YCl enhances the intermolecular interactions to improve donor/acceptor compatibility and film-forming process in blend film, consequently leading to more ordered film morphology. Consequently, the QF-YCl-based device achieves a record PCE of 20.23% (vs. 19.60% for QCl-YF), achieving the highest efficiency for dimer-based binary OSCs. This work demonstrates that asymmetric-isomerization is a precise and effective design strategy for high-performance dimer acceptors.
Suppressing non-radiative energy loss (ΔE3) by enhancing the photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of active-layer materials, particularly the acceptor component, is important for achieving high-performance organic solar cells (OSCs). A key challenge is how to design acceptor materials that attain high PLQY while pres...

Achieving an ideal bi-continuous network in organic solar cells requires balancing molecular self-assembly and film-formation kinetics. For strong-interaction polymers like D18, intense backbone interactions often lead to kinetically trapped, disordered states. Here, we present a molecular symmetry-breaking strategy...

Dimeric molecule acceptors (DMAs) are promising for organic solar cells (OSCs) due to their superior stability and high efficiency. However, further efficiency advancement is critically constrained by a fundamental trade‑off between achieving ordered molecular packing for efficient charge transport and maintaining high...

The efficiency bottleneck of organic solar cells (OSCs) is predominantly hindered by severe non-radiative energy loss (ΔE3), which primarily originates from strong electron-phonon coupling and detrimental charge recombination into darker state traps. Herein, we designed and synthesized a highly rigid and polarized dime...
The performance of organic solar cells (OSCs) is predominantly constrained by the low dielectric constants of organic semiconductors, which limit exciton dissociation and exacerbate charge recombination. In particular, dimeric acceptor molecules (DMAs) typically suffer from insufficient short-circuit current density an...

Small-molecule donor/polymer acceptor (SD/PA) organic solar cells (OSCs) are attractive for their morphological stability, yet their efficiencies still lag behind those of mainstream systems. One key difficulty is that the acceptor must aggregate strongly enough to form ordered electron-transport domains while remain...
