TL;DR

The findings highlight the frequent contamination of wheat flour by (multiple) mycotoxins in Palestine and emphasise the associated potential health risks, especially for infants, and the need for effective control strategies.

Abstract

The occurrence of 22 mycotoxins in wheat flour marketed in the West Bank, Palestine, was investigated to evaluate the health risk for consumers. A total of 60 wheat flour samples were analysed by UHPLC-MS/MS, revealing the presence of several regulated and emerging mycotoxins, including AFB1, AFG2, OTA, DON, ZEN, CIT, T-2 toxin, fumonisins (FBs), beauvericin (BEA), and enniantins (ENNs). ENN A showed the highest levels, whereas FB1 was the most frequently detected mycotoxin, occurring in 70% of the analysed samples. Mycotoxin co-occurrence was commonly observed, with 2-8 mycotoxins being simultaneously detected in individual samples. Analytical results were compared with current European legislation, as it contains the most extensive list of regulated mycotoxins. Overall, the findings highlight the frequent contamination of wheat flour by (multiple) mycotoxins in Palestine and emphasise the associated potential health risks, especially for infants, and the need for effective control strategies.

Survey of Mycotoxin Occurrence, Co-Occurrence, Contamination Levels, and Dietary Exposure in Cereals and Legumes Commonly Consumed in Jordan

The occurrence of mycotoxins in staple foods is a major food safety concern due to their adverse health effects. This study investigated the occurrence and concentrations of seven major mycotoxins—total aflatoxins (AFT), aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), deoxynivalenol (DON), fumonisins (FMN), ochratoxin A (OTA), T-2/HT-2 toxin, an...

Prevalence and health risk assessment of aflatoxins in locally processed edible oil in Oromia, Ethiopia

Aflatoxins are potent carcinogenic mycotoxins that frequently contaminate oilseed value chains in developing countries. This study assessed the occurrence of aflatoxins (AFB₁, AFTB₂, AFG₁, AFG₂) and associated dietary health risks in 69 samples comprising oilseeds, crude edible oils, and oil cakes collected from local...

Dietary Exposure to Genotoxic Mycotoxins in Maize ( Zea mays L.) Grains Consumed in Cotonou Municipality (Benin): the Case of Aflatoxin B1

Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) is a genotoxic and carcinogenic mycotoxin produced mainly by Aspergillus flavus , A. parasiticus and A. nomius , moulds that contaminate cereals, including maize ( Zea mays L.), which is widely consumed in Benin. The aim of this study was to assess the level of dietary exposure to AFB...

Mycotoxins in maize: from field pathology to animal and human health threats (review)

Maize is highly susceptible to contamination by toxigenic micromycetes. Mycotoxins accumulate in commercial grain and pose a serious threat to public food safety, causing toxicosis in both humans and animals. This study aims to systematize current scientific data on the transition of hazardous mycotoxins from a field p...
