Design of an SIW-Based Frequency-Scanning Millimeter-Wave MIMO Antenna for 5G Applications
Abstract
This paper presents a substrate-integrated waveguide (SIW)-based horn-reflector-fed leaky-wave multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) antenna for millimeter-wave 5G applications. The proposed leaky-wave antenna aperture consists of a $25 \times 16$ array of slot pairs arranged in a planar grid configuration, providing beam scanning of ±18° in a single plane when the operating frequency is swept from 25.7 GHz to 31.6 GHz. The second adjacent slot is optimized to suppress unwanted scan blindness at boresight, which is a common limitation of conventional leaky-wave antennas. The antenna achieves a gain of 18 dBi within the scanning range. The proposed antenna system satisfies MIMO performance requirements, exhibiting a high port isolation of 15 dB, an envelope correlation coefficient (ECC) below 0.02, and a diversity gain of approximately 10 dB.
