Aug 2026 · Journal of Psychosexual Health · 0 citations · 11 references

Abstract

This article examines the impact of internet exposure and digital media engagement on the psychosexual well-being of adolescents and young adults. It explores how online interactions, sexually explicit content, social media, virtual relationships, and peer influence shape emotional, behavioral, cognitive, and relational dimensions of youth psychosexual development. The study is based on an extensive review and analysis of existing empirical literature, recent digital behavior trends, and contemporary studies related to youth mental and sexual health in the digital environment. The article evaluates both positive and negative psychosexual outcomes associated with online exposure. Findings indicate that digital platforms provide several positive benefits, including improved sexual health awareness, access to educational resources, identity exploration, and participation in supportive online communities. However, excessive or unregulated exposure is associated with distorted sexual expectations, risky sexual behaviors, cybersexual addiction, body image concerns, anxiety, depression, and vulnerability to online exploitation. The study further identifies moderating factors such as age, parental supervision, digital literacy, cultural background, and frequency of online engagement, which significantly influence psychosexual outcomes among youth. The study highlights the urgent need for structured digital sex education, parental monitoring mechanisms, mental health support systems, and policy-level interventions to minimize harmful effects while promoting healthy psychosexual development in the digital age. The findings contribute to the growing body of literature on youth psychosexual health and offer practical implications for educators, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and families.
