Digital Transformation in Industry

Abstract

This Productivity Insights publication outlines four practical AI strategies specifically crafted for small and medium-sized manufacturing enterprises: (1) predictive maintenance and AI-based visual inspection for quality control, (2) integration through digital twins and cyber-physical production systems, (3) human-in-the-loop operations, and (4) collaboration through federated learning. Each strategy comes with simple implementation guidelines and a brief business justification. The report also includes a readiness check method and a 90-day roadmap aimed at achieving tangible results. The main goal of this publication is to assist factory leaders in transitioning from isolated trials to scalable applications. It focuses on measurable outcomes like reduced downtime, increased productivity, enhanced energy efficiency, and improved overall equipment effectiveness. It also stresses the importance of governance frameworks and human involvement to ensure clear, actionable, and people-centered technology adoption.
