Abstract
The paper presents an investigation of the relation between the axial and lateral displacement for an axially loaded beam under four different boundary conditions based on the infinitesimal strain theory. The mathematical model is developed by solving the buckling governing differential equation, where the use of geometric rules leads to a formula containing the axial and lateral displacement variables. For the purpose of practical use, the model is further simplified, and the solution of a radical equation is performed. The obtained results are compared with the finite-element simulation, where good agreement is achieved in the region of the infinitesimal strain theory validity, whereas significant discrepancies appear in the region of the finite-strain theory. The paper shows a limitation of the infinitesimal strain theory to derive a relation between the axial and lateral displacement and provides the displacement range where the mentioned theory may be used with negligible errors. The paper provides a simplified solution to model the presented problem and offers a practical alternative to more precise and complex models.
In the context of the linear Cowin – Nunziato micro-dilatation theory, the contact problem of axial compression of a finite transversely isotropic porous cylinder placed between two rigid plates moving towards each other is addressed. To account for the effect of friction, an effective integral parameter is introduced...

The article considers a plane problem of the linear elasticity theory for an annular region loaded on the outer contour by two oppositely directed concentrated forces. An analytical solution to the problem is obtained using functions of a complex variable. More specifically, the solution is constructed by the Kolosov-M...

Background/Aim: This study develops and verifies a finite-difference formulation for the linear buckling analysis of rectangular power-law functionally graded material (P-FGM) plates, based on first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT). The aim is to provide an accurate, computationally efficient numerical approach fo...

A geometrically-exact planar beam finite-element framework is developed for the analysis of beams with hyperelastic constitutive models. A conventional three-field beam model is first formulated with full geometrical nonlinearity and a linear elastic material law. The kinematics are then enriched by an additional globa...

An alternative design method, capable of predicting the local buckling capacity of thin‐walled steel cross‐sections of arbitrary shape, is presented. Unlike currently codified approaches (i.e. the Effective Width Method and the Direct Strength Method) which are based on empirical curve‐fitted equations, the new approac...
An approach to directly assessing the stability of a flat frame structure under unsteady dynamic loading is proposed and numerically investigated. In contrast to the traditional choice of a single static or quasi-static calculation case, at each step of integrating the equation of motion, an instantaneous stability pro...
