Abstract

Urban expansion has predominantly occurred in peri-urban areas rather than within the urban core. It is mainly determined by unorganised growth, increased immigration, and rapid population growth in the urban fringe areas. The present paper analyses the trend of urbanisation, the land use and land cover change (LULC), and growth of built-up area in the Barasat-Barrackpore urban areas over the last four decades since 1990. The LULC change was prepared by using the Landsat images for the years of 1990, 2000, 2010, and 2020 by applying the maximum likelihood algorithm of supervised classification with the help of Remote Sensing and GIS techniques in ArcGIS. The four urban landscapes viz. urban core area, peri-urban area, scatter settlements, and open spaces were categorised using the NDBI sprawl matrix for analysing the magnitude and direction of urban growth. It is found that the urban population, urban area and urban units increased by 54%, 32%, and 42%, respectively in the period of 2001- 2011. The built-up area increased in 102.50%, while agricultural, vegetation cover, fallow, and wetlands decreased in 23%, 59%, 60%, and 57%, accordingly. It is also known, by conversion matrix, that agricultural lands have been converted into built-up and fallow lands, vegetative cover into built-up, fallow lands and agriculture, fallow lands into built-up and agricultural, wetlands into fallow lands, agricultural and built-up area, respectively. This study may help the planners and policy-makers for sustainable urban development.

Monitoring & Evaluating of Urban Expansion and Its Impact on Land use Land Cover Change of Sargodha, Pakistan (2000-2025)

Urban growth is a significant land-use transition that is taking place in many rapidly growing cities, especially where the expansion is taking place on productive agricultural land. The purpose of this research was to explore the Spatio-temporal pattern of urban expansion and changes in land use/land cover (LULC) in S...

Spatio temporal land use and land cover changes in a peri urban protected area of Kamrup Metropolitan District, Assam, India using geospatial techniques

Protection from human- induced pressures is vital to the survival of peri-urban protected areas, particularly in fast-growing urban areas. This research focuses on land use and land cover change in the Amchang Wildlife Sanctuary located in peri-urban region of Guwahati city in Kamrup Metropolitan district, Assam, India...

Spatial and Temporal Assessment of Land Use Land Cover Changes Driven by Urbanisation in Rwanda, a Case of Kigali City (2000-2020)

Rapid urbanisation has significantly transformed land use and land cover (LULC) patterns in Kigali City, Rwanda, over the past two decades. This study provides a spatial and temporal assessment of LULC changes between 2000 and 2020, highlighting the drivers and implications of urban expansion. Using multi-temporal sate...

Examining Urban Growth Dynamics and Sprawl Patterns of Ludhiana City, Punjab: A Geospatial Study

Accelerated urbanization has led to an increasing demand for land to build new areas of settlement and related infrastructure. This growing demand for land shows an encroachment onto related land uses and other natural areas. Therefore, it is important to critically examine the changing land-use/land-cover (LULC) patte...

Assessing the Effect of Urban Expansion on Forest Degradation in Huye District, Rwanda

Urban expansion is among the principal drivers of land-use and land-cover (LULC) change in tropical secondary cities, converting forest and agricultural land into built-up area and eroding the ecosystem services on which surrounding populations depend. This study applied a mixed quantitative-geospatial and socio-instit...

Urban Influence on Landscape Transformation and Land Cover Interactions During Urban Expansion (1972–2022): A Remote Sensing and GIS-Based Analysis

Abstract This study investigates how urban expansion influences land cover dynamics. An interactive analytical approach was adopted to examine the transitions among built-up areas, cropland, and bare land throughout the urbanization process. Remote Sensing and GIS techniques, in conjunction with the Land Transfer Matri...
