Abstract

Let $p$ be a complex polynomial of degree $n\ge2$, and let $\sigma_2(p)$ be the root mean square distance of its zeros from their centroid, including multiplicities. We prove that every zero of $p$ lies within distance $\sigma_2(p)$ of a critical point. This proves Borcea's quadratic conjecture and, in particular, gives a new proof of Sendov's conjecture. Two polynomial integration identities prove the result analytically for $n\ge2048$. For the remaining degrees, we derive explicit necessary inequalities, including a variable integration endpoint and an exact centered coefficient identity. Directed integer arithmetic certifies a finite covering of the resulting parameter domains. Degrees $4$--$26$ use $150\,845$ certified three-dimensional regions; degrees $27$--$2047$ use a further $27\,429$ regions, with degree intervals allowed. The cases of degree 2 and 3 were already covered by Khavinson--Pereira--Putinar--Saff--Shimorin.

A proof of Sylvester's conjecture

We prove Sylvester's conjecture, originating in his 1879 study of ternary cubic equations, that every prime $p\equiv4,7,8\pmod9$ is a sum of two rational cubes. Elkies announced a proof for the classes $4$ and $7$ in 1994, and Yin recently supplied a complete proof. For the remaining class $p\equiv8\pmod9$, we prove th...

Kolyvagin's conjecture at non-ordinary primes

Let $K$ be an imaginary quadratic field and let $p \ge 5$ be a prime that is unramified in $K$. Let $\mathcal{A}_f/\mathbb{Q}$ be an abelian variety of $\mathrm{GL}_2$-type associated with a weight-two modular form $f$, with good non-ordinary reduction at $p$, and suppose that $(f,K)$ satisfies the generalized Heegner...

A Hyperplane Bound and Ward's Divisibility Conjecture

Let $q=p^f$, where $p$ is prime. We prove that every $q$-ary linear code meeting the Griesmer bound, with positive dimension and minimum distance $d\ge1$, is $p^{\max\{0,\nu_p(d)-f+1\}}$-divisible, as asserted in Ward's conjecture. Arbitrary projective column multiplicities are allowed. The geometric ingredient is a bo...

A linear bound for Fujita's freeness conjecture

Let $X$ be a smooth complex projective variety of dimension $n$, and let $L$ be an ample Cartier divisor. We prove that $K_X+mL$ is globally generated for every integer $m\geq\lceil C_0n\rceil$, where $C_0=1.77629\ldots$ is an explicit constant. In particular, $K_X+2nL$ is globally generated. We also prove that if $Z$...

Sharp Polynomial Upper Bounds for Anticanonical Volumes

For every positive integer $n$, we prove that there is a constant $C_n$, depending only on $n$, such that $Vol(-K_X) \leq C_n \epsilon^{-(2^n-n-1)}$ whenever $X$ admits an $\epsilon$-lc log Fano boundary. The exponent is optimal in every dimension at least two, even for toric Fano varieties of Picard number one. In par...

A Combinatorial Proof of Hilton's Conjecture and Beyond

Using refined absorption, we prove that for every integer $g\ge 1$ and real $\gamma>0$, and for sufficiently large $n$, there exists an $n^{-1+\gamma}$-spread distribution on Latin squares of order $n$ and girth at least $g$ that have no proper subsquares. This implies a combinatorial proof of Hilton's conjecture from...
