Learning with the serious game QuizMaze
Abstract
QuizMaze is a mobile application for a serious game that combines digital flashcards with maze navigation to support learner engagement, motivation, and knowledge acquisition. In QuizMaze, users review flashcards in quiz mode and earn swipes through correct responses, which are then used to navigate a maze in a separate game mode. Designed as a flexible tool for a wide range of subjects, the application preserves the simplicity of flashcards while adding motivation through low-complexity gameplay. An Android prototype was developed in Flutter and evaluated with ten professionals in the mobile application space. Participants completed a guided test session and questionnaire about usability and learning effectiveness. Results were generally positive, with users reporting that the app helped them learn the material. Feedback also highlighted opportunities for improvement, including stronger onboarding, clearer rules, additional reminders, and automated flashcard generation. Overall, QuizMaze shows promise as a reusable game-based learning framework across subjects.
