Let $X$ be a smooth algebraic variety over $\mathbb{R}$. We study the separation of the connected components of $X(\mathbb{R})$ by equivariant cohomology, unramified cohomology, and signatures of unramified quadratic forms. Our results highlight how the geometry of $X$ influences these questions. We apply them to cubic hypersurfaces, complete intersections of two quadrics, abelian varieties, and Enriques surfaces. We also obtain new bounds on the exponent of the cokernel of higher signature morphisms in $\mathbf{I}$-cohomology and investigate the optimality of these bounds for smooth projective varieties.
Let $\bar{X}$ be a smooth projective connected complex curve, $D \subset \bar X$ be a finite set of reduced points, and $X=\bar X\setminus D$. We give a moduli-theoretic construction of an exact equivalence between logarithmic flat bundles on $(\bar X, D)$ with nilpotent residues and semistable logarithmic Higgs bundle...
Let $G$ be a finite group acting properly by lattice automorphisms on a complete simplicial fan $\Sigma$. An open question due to Stanley asked whether the (ungraded) representation carried by the cohomology $H^*(X_{\Sigma})$ of the associated toric variety $X_{\Sigma}$ is isomorphic to a permutation representation of...

Let $L$ be a line bundle of negative degree on an elliptic curve $E$. While the ruled surface $M := \mathbb P(\mathcal O_E \oplus L)$ is one of the simplest varieties in algebraic geometry, its tangent bundle $T_M$ is surprisingly complex: we first show that the ring of symmetric tensors is not finitely generated. We t...
For a (quasi)projective variety $X$ and an automorphism $f$ of $X$, we define moduli spaces of twisted endomorphisms of sheaves on $X$. If the automorphism $f$ has finite order, we construct a sheaf of noncommutative algebras $\mathcal{A}_0(f)$ and show that sheaves with a twisted endomorphism can be described as $\mat...
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p>0$ and let $W=W(k)$. We prove that the torsion subgroup of $H^3_{\mathrm{cris}}(X/W)$ is a birational invariant of smooth projective varieties over $k$. The proof combines the action of correspondences on Hodge--Witt cohomology and on the first Nygaard piece...
We describe transversal singularity types of the singular locus of the $A$-discriminant for $A\subset\mathbb Z$, and deduce a Whitney type theorem for a coordinate projection of a surface defined by a general polynomial equation with a given Newton polytope $N$: under mild combinaorial conditions on $N$, all multisingu...
