Minimally invasive thoracolaparoscopic versus open esophagectomy for benign and malignant esophageal diseases: a single-center comparative experience
Abstract
Aim: The aim of the present study was to compare thoracolaparoscopic MIE and OE in a single-center cohort including both benign and malignant esophageal diseases, with emphasis on perioperative outcomes, postoperative complications, early mortality, and adjusted predictors of overall postoperative morbidity. Materials and Methods: Retrospective observational cohort study conducted at the Department of Gastrointestinal and Endocrine Surgery of the Syzganov National Scientific Center of Surgery. A total of 63 patients were included in the final analysis (26 in the MIE group and 37 in the OE group). Results: Operative duration was significantly longer in the MIE group (425.6±155.7 min vs 332.5±66.4 min, p=0.007). Estimated blood loss in malignant cases was lower in the MIE group (149.5±46.5 mL vs 195.6±36.1 mL, p=0.020). Overall postoperative morbidity, specific postoperative complications, length of hospital stay, and mortality were comparable between the two approaches.
