We propose through this paper to highlight the fact that pronouns represent an inherent and indispensable factor in the process of language economy. The present study therefore aims to analyze the pronoun from a discursive point of view, having as its main objective to trace the purposes that these lexical units have in communication. The pronoun will be approached from a diachronic perspective, in the sense that we will broadly trace the course of this class on an evolutionary scale, drawing a parallel, at a formal level, between the status of the pronoun in the 16 th – 17 th centuries and that in the current literary norm. The main reason for choosing this time period, as a reference point, is tied with the fact that, between the 16 th and 17 th centuries, the first written attestations of Romanian texts appear, starting with Scrisoarea lui Neacșu, which dates from 1521. Also, the examples provided in this paper are based on material extracted both from the Corpus de limbă vorbită actuală nedialectală (2013) and from other sources, which will be indicated in the context. These reflections will be reinforced by innovative studies and research in the field of pragmatics and communication theory, demonstrating that pronouns are important in the economy of language.
