Assessment of mothers’ satisfaction with newborn care identifies factors that affect mothers’ satisfaction with newborn care, establishes a correlation between sample demographics and mothers’ satisfaction, and identifies neutral response in concerning to satisfaction level.
Abstract
Background:
One of the most important measures of the quality of care is maternal satisfaction. For newborns, this is dependent on the mother’s perspective. Treatment plans have failed, neonatal readmissions have grown, mothers’ worry has increased, and they have lost faith in health systems because they were dissatisfied with the care their newborns receive in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). This study aimed to assess mothers’ satisfaction with newborn care, identify factors that affect mothers’ satisfaction with newborn care, and establish a correlation between sample demographics and mothers’ satisfaction.
Materials and methods:
In this cross-sectional study design, a total of 120 mothers were selected using a convenience (non-probability) sampling technique. The data were collected through interviews and a study instrument. The collected data were analyzed using the Statistical Package of Social Science (SPSS) version 25.
Results:
The results show that the age of mothers aged ≤ 25 years constituted 50% of the study sample, and that mothers in primary school made up a higher percentage (32.5%). Mothers’ age, level of education, residency, and gestational age had significant effects on mothers’ satisfaction level at
p
-values of 0.004, 0.006, 0.051, 0.003, and 0.001, respectively. Most mothers had a neutral response regarding level of satisfaction.
Conclusion:
The most of sample were neutral response in concerning to satisfaction level. The neonate gestational age and length of stay in the hospital have influenced the level of satisfaction.
