Building a Future-Ready Workforce: Workplace Learning, Employee Well-Being and Performance in Indian Organisations – A Conceptual Review

Abstract

This conceptual review examines how workplace learning and employee well-being jointly shape performance in Indian organisations. Adopting an integrative literature review design, the study synthesises 22 scholarly and institutional sources, comprising human capital and social exchange theory, the science of training and memory, research on work–family conflict and well-being, and recent India-focused studies on work-life balance policies, microlearning and adaptive learning technologies, through thematic analysis. Four themes emerge: the learning imperative created by rapid change in skill demand; the design of learning in short, spaced and adaptive formats that fit around work; the contribution of work-life balance policies and supervisor support to well-being; and the pathway from well-being and satisfaction to job performance. The synthesis indicates that learning and well-being are not competing claims on the human resource budget but mutually reinforcing investments: well-designed learning reduces the strain of change, and employees who are supported reciprocate with engagement in both work and learning. The paper integrates these insights into a Learning–Well-Being–Performance framework and advances five research propositions for empirical testing. Implications are offered for human resource managers, line managers and policymakers concerned with workforce readiness.
