Abstract

Cobalt carbide (Co2C) shows promise for CO2 hydrogenation to C2+ hydrocarbons via the CO2-Fischer-Tropsch pathway, although the production rate is still limited by the slow CO hydrogenation step. Herein, we developed CeOx-modified Co2C catalysts. At a Co/Ce molar ratio of 99, the catalyst achieved a C2+ hydrocarbon space-time yield of 106 mmol gcat -1 h-1 at 35% CO2 conversion (300°C, 3 MPa), outperforming all reported Co-based catalysts and comparable to some Fe-based catalysts. Characterizations and kinetic studies reveal that highly dispersed CeOx interacts with Co, forming abundant and intimately contacted interfaces and effectively tuning the electronic structure of Co2C. The Co2C-CeOx electronic interaction enhances CO adsorption and H2 activation, accelerating the rate-determining CO hydrogenation and ultimately boosting C2+ hydrocarbon formation. This work provides a feasible strategy for designing efficient Co2C-based catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation.

Boosting CO2 hydrogenation to C2+ hydrocarbons via phase modulation using a Ni-doped CuCo catalyst

The catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 to C2+ hydrocarbons is one of the most promising routes to achieving carbon neutrality. However, the development of effective catalysts to promote this transformation is still a challenging task. This work modulates the phase composition of CuCo bimetallic oxide catalysts through Ni d...

Inverse ZrO2/Co Enables Low-Temperature Direct CO2 Hydrogenation to Liquid Hydrocarbons

Direct hydrogenation of CO2 to liquid hydrocarbons (C5+) at low temperature is a highly desirable but challenging transformation, as conventional catalysts typically operate at high temperatures via indirect pathways by producing and using a CO intermediate. In this work, we report an inverse ZrO2/Co catalyst that en...

Ambient-Pressure C–C Coupling in Photothermal CO2 Hydrogenation by Interface-Engineered CoFe Catalysts: Achieving > 99 % Selectivity for Hydrocarbons

Direct photothermal CO2 hydrogenation to high-value C2+ hydrocarbons under ambient pressure is highly desirable, yet it faces the substantial challenge of excessively high CO byproduct selectivity. Herein, we report a CoFe-600 catalyst, synthesized by reducing an LDH-CoFe precursor at 600 °C, that exhibits promising...

Interfacial and Confinement Effects in Carbon-Encapsulated FeCo Catalysts for High-Yield CO2 Hydrogenation to Liquid Fuels

Achieving a high yield of liquid fuels from CO2 hydrogenation remains a significant challenge due to the limited CO2 conversion and the dominant formation of undesired C1 byproducts. Herein, we report a carbon-confined Fe-Co interfacial catalyst that establishes a kinetically coupled reverse water gas shift (RWGS) an...

CeO2-supported In2O3 for enhanced CO2 electroreduction to formate: the role of support defects.

Simultaneous activation of CO2 and H2O remains a key challenge in the electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2RR) to formate. Beyond providing structural support, the catalyst support can serve as a secondary active component that facilitates reactant adsorption and activation. Herein, an In2O3/CeO2 catal...
