Abstract
This paper investigates the relationship between financial inclusion and the export
competitiveness of small enterprises in Abia State, Nigeria. Despite numerous government
interventions and financial reforms, small enterprises continue to struggle with limited access
to export financing, weak institutional support, and low participation in international trade.
The study examines how financial inclusion—through access to credit, insurance, payment
systems, and financial literacy—affects export capacity, market reach, and competitiveness. A
descriptive survey design was adopted, and data were collected from 150 export-oriented small
enterprises across the three senatorial districts of Abia State. The findings reveal that improved
financial inclusion enhances enterprise competitiveness by strengthening liquidity, investment
capability, and participation in export markets. However, constraints such as high lending
rates, bureaucratic loan processes, and inadequate awareness of financial programs hinder
effective utilization. The study concludes that promoting financial inclusion is crucial for
empowering small enterprises to integrate successfully into global value chains. It recommends
policy reforms to improve access to financial services, capacity-building programs to
strengthen financial literacy, and digital solutions to simplify export transactions.
