The importance of providing auxiliary access facilities for bridge inspection
Abstract
This article addresses the problem of ensuring access to structural elements of bridge structures for visual inspections and condition assessments. The aim of the study is to substantiate the feasibility of installing permanent inspection walkways and other auxiliary access facilities for the inspection of hard-to-reach structural elements. The research is based on practical experience gained during inspections of structures with high piers in different regions of Ukraine, an analysis of current regulatory requirements, data on the operational condition of structures, and international bridge maintenance practices. It is noted that a significant number of bridges designed during the 1970s and 1980s were not provided with permanent access facilities to superstructure elements, pier caps, bearing seats, and bearings, which complicates inspection and repair works and necessitates the use of lifts, aerial work platforms, scaffolding, and other temporary access facilities. It is demonstrated that the installation of permanent inspection facilities improves work safety, facilitates regular monitoring of the technical condition of bridge structures, and contributes to the timely detection of defects. It has been established that, given the limited availability of automated monitoring systems and specialized equipment in Ukraine, permanent inspection walkways represent an optimal solution for ensuring access to bridge structural elements. It is proposed to provide for their installation during major repairs and reconstruction of bridge structures.
