Abstract

The Vatican’s unique position not only in Europe but also in international relations in general is determined by the fact that, as the religious center of the Catholic world, the Holy See is forced to pursue its foreign policy based not on its ideological and diplomatic preferences, but rather on the need to preserve the unity of the global Catholic Church. This explains the dual nature of the Vatican’s relations with the “People’s Republic of China”. In particular, while maintaining official diplomatic relations with the “Republic of China” on Taiwan, the Vatican seeks to find a compromise with mainland China — the PRC, where approximately 6 million Catholics reside. This policy has been particularly relevant since the election of Pope Francis in 2013, who achieved the signing of an agreement with the People’s Republic of Chinaon the appointment of bishops in 2018. This agreement is currently the primary document regulating the relations between the Vaticanand the People’s Republic of China. Although the agreement is formally aimed at resolving only one of the numerous issues in the relationship between the two parties, it holds significant practical and symbolic importance. This article aims at analyzing the specific aspects of the China’s communication with the Vatican, including how the 2018 agreement has influenced these interactions, how it is being implemented, and the prospects for its renewal with the election of a new Pope.
