Abstract
The great applications of upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) can be further extended by their encapsulation within conjugated porous polymers (CPPs). However, the synthesis of monodisperse core@shell based CPPs upconversion nanohybrids remains a challenge. Herein, we report a simple, general strategy that combines (i) prefunctionalization of UCNPs with polymerizable units, (ii) monomer-feed control, and (iii) a centrifugation-based work-up to ensure anchoring to the inorganic core. This approach enables covalent growth of CPP shells with tunable thickness and low polydispersity. Thus, a BODIPY-based CPP shell was grown over both core (NaYF4: Yb3+ (20%), Er3+ (2%)) and core-shell (NaYF4: Yb3+ (20%), Er3+ (2%)@NaYF4) UCNPs, yielding UCC@CPP and UCCS@CPP nanohybrids. Under near-infrared (NIR) excitation, the UCNP core upconverts light to activate the surrounding CPP shell leading to photocatalytic activity. UCCS@CPP exhibits a twofold higher photocatalytic activity than UCC@CPP highlighting the critical role of the NaYF4 passivation layer in preserving upconversion efficiency. Our approach overcomes key limitations of previous designs achieving improved photooxidation yields (i.e., 42%) and excellent recyclability. This modular platform provides a robust and versatile route to UC@CPP hybrids for designing NIR-driven, reactive oxygen species (ROS)-generating photocatalysts.
Cancer theranostics urgently demands multifunctional nanomaterials capable of simultaneously enabling high-sensitivity imaging and multimodal synergistic therapy. In this study, a three-layer core–shell nanocomposite, NaYF4:Yb,Tm@NaGdF4:Eu@NH2-MIL-53(Fe), was designed and synthesized. The NaYF4:Yb,Tm nanoparticle core...

The development of nitric oxide (NO) donor agents capable of controlled NO release upon light irradiation in the biological window is relevant for phototherapies. The cis-[Ru(dc-bpy)2(SO3)(NO)]+ complex (dc-bpy = 2,2′-dicarboxybipyridine) is synthesized and anchored onto a NaYF4:Yb,Tm@ZIF-8-NH2 nanoplatform. The isol...

External stimulus-responsive nanoplatforms based on biodegradable co-polymers and surfactants were loaded with luminescent nanoparticles for dynamic lifetime-based monitoring of pH changes in solution. In particular, we used PEG-PLGA-based blocks co-stabilized with either amphoteric coco-betaine or nonionic Pluronic F-...

Integrating strain and ligand effects with surface defects can precisely modulate the d-band center of Pt-based core−shell catalysts for boosting their performance in fuel cell applications. However, it remains a challenge to synthesize defect-rich Pt-based core−shell nanocrystals in a water-based protocol and to est...
