Fixture design for ball joint parts in automated machining
Abstract
To address the high-precision positioning and clamping requirements of ball joints (ball studs) in automated CNC turning operations, this paper presents a specialized fixture designed for TAKAMAZ precision lathes integrated with robotic arms. The fixture employs a combined positioning strategy of "three-jaw chuck with tailstock center" and taper positioning, using spherical cavity side planes and a spherical cavity with taper to ensure close surface contact between the ball joint and the spherical cavity, thereby addressing the industry challenge of stable clamping for spherical parts. The process utilizes a non-standard hydraulic chuck with a live center to achieve face positioning and tailstock clamping. Practical applications demonstrate that this fixture system, combined with automated loading/unloading robotic arms, achieves a production cycle of 6 seconds per piece with a product qualification rate exceeding 98%, meeting the demands of high-volume automated production.
