Design and Implementation of a Novel Laboratory Stand for Teaching IoT
Abstract
This work prioritizes the implementation of laboratory experiments using real-world experimental components. A new laboratory stand concept is proposed for hands-on learning of IoT technologies, and the functionality of an IoT stand based on real-world components is discussed. The proposed approach combines laboratory-based learning with the use of real-world components, enabling students to progress from studying individual IoT components to designing and implementing complete IoT systems. The laboratory stand is designed as a modular platform that supports different sensors and actuators and enables students to perform experiments focused on system architecture, data collection, monitoring, and control. The proposed platform is based on a Raspberry Pi 5 server, Zigbee communication, a Wi-Fi network, and software tools including Home Assistant, Zigbee2MQTT, and Grafana. The stand allows students to independently configure sensors and actuators, design the architecture of an IoT system, and conduct experiments using real-world devices. Several educational courses were developed using the proposed laboratory stand, and the results of student surveys indicate positive perceptions regarding the development of independent learning and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to apply theoretical knowledge in practice. The study demonstrates the high functional capabilities of the real-world IoT stand and its strong potential for practical applications. The proposed solution can support not only individual laboratory experiments but also the implementation of complete technological processes with comprehensive parameter monitoring and control. Furthermore, the integration of multiple laboratory stands can extend the platform to support advanced educational and research activities.
